The project

SPRINT – Supporting Project to Restart on Intelligent Networks for Telecommunications is a cascade project of the PNRR extended partnership RESTART (RESearch and innovation on future Telecommunications systems and networks, to make Italy more smART), funded by the Spoke 8 call of the University of Rome Tor Vergata. It follows the paradigms of Networks for AI and AI for Networks and covers the tasks originated by five RESTART projects (NETWIN, ADAPTO, LIASON, WATCHEDGE, WITS), from semantic and goal-oriented communications and energy optimisation of network functions to network security, AI-based orchestration and massive IoT data processing, plus the support of federated 5G experiments across the Spoke. The consortium, coordinated by the University of Salerno, gathers ten universities and seven companies.

Our role

The University of L'Aquila (DISIM, Networks & Services Lab) led Task 6.1 "MEC SIEM", related to the LIASON project: the design of lightweight monitoring agents for Multi-access Edge Computing nodes, the development of a Security Information and Event Management system tailored to the heterogeneous and distributed MEC landscape, the training of machine-learning models that detect anomalous behaviour and emerging threats, and the integration of Data Processing Units (DPUs) to offload security functions with in-network processing, evaluated in terms of scalability and energy efficiency. The task also produced new models of network attacks on decentralised architectures and algorithms for their detection and mitigation, demonstrated on the lab's MEC and O-RAN testbed.
